Last seasons young player of the year Gary Thomas has joined up with Hurstpierpoint. We hope to see you back in the future and thanks for your contributions that you have all made.

Handcross Village FC 1st Team Season Review 2008/09
Following the league re-structure The Tigers front side slipped yet further down the Mid Sussex League into Divisision 6 and so began the long road back to former glories. With the club now in the hands of Anthony Kidd as Chairman and 1st Team Manager a big season lay in wait for the whole side and promotion was crucial in order to finally start moving forward. With a more organised and committed structure off the pitch it would be up to the players to deliver and they did- just!!! This is a look back at the season as it unfolded month by month and events that occurred during these times.
August
Pre- season began in earnest with a number of games against higher opposition that would test the new look Tigers. With virtually the whole side remaining from last season it was bolstered with a number of returnees to the club. Simon Turner, Michael Anderson and Barry Hollingsworth joined from Ifield Edwards along with Lee Spears from Three Bridges and Phil Peters signed from the disbanded Northgate Athletic. The traditional curtain raiser was a inter club game with the Reserves and showed the potential of both sides. The strong heat played its part with The First team eventually coming through to win 5-2 but improvement would be needed for the remaining fixtures. Heath Pilgrims were the next visitors in vastly different conditions and came away with a 1-1 draw in what was a fiercely competitive game with what would turn out to be a very, very different side compared to the line up that was encountered on three occasions later in the season. It is only now that we realise we probably played a lot of their front side from Division 1. Dan Goodrum netting the Villagers goal. Rowfant Village came to The Rec and were dispatched in style 8-0 as the potential of the team began to show. Wayne Baines showed what he is about netting 2 with another brace from Michael Anderson and further strikes from Lee Spears, Ian Parsons, Rich Martin and Alnur Hassam. Another Crawley side were next in the shape of Worth Park Rangers and despite losing 6-2 the young Rangers side put in a fine display and pushed the vastly more expierenced hosts all the way. Nigel Brake made an appearance in this game amid hopes he would sign but this wasnt to be. Ian Parsons bagging another 2, Wayne Baines, Michael Anderson and Simon Turner did the damage. The only defeat of Pre season came against a quality side in Horsham Trinity from West Sussex League 1 but we gave them a really good game with Anderson and Spears the scorers. The final warm up saw another 1-1 draw with fellow league 6 side Lindfield III. Unfortunately for Michael Anderson he suffered a serious knee injury that would rule him out for the season bar a few brief appearances. All eyes now turned to the big kick off and the start of an exciting and important campaign for the club.
September
Rain forced the postponment of a clash with Heath Pilgrims II on day one so the season kicked off a week later and was worth waiting for. Wisdom Sports III were the visitors and were given a thumping with the 7-2 scoreline not telling the full story as The Tigers could and perhaps should have had double that. Alnur Hassam was the star of the day in his final season with a stunning hat trick including one of the goals of the season with a beautiful lob from 25 yards after a flowing move. This would make the league sit up and take notice. A superb battling away win at eventual champions East Grinstead Wanderers raised spirits still higher. The Month ended with the cup campaign beginning with a Somerville Cup fixture away at Heath Pilgrims II. As we suspected in pre season the side for this game was very different to the one faced in August and again the 3-1 win should have been far greater against a distinctly average side who looked to intimidate Village. Two goals from Tom Mitchell and another from Wayne Baines who had scored in all three games so far.
October
This looked on paper to be a tough month with two big games against potential promotion rivals. First up however was a comfortable 5-0 away win at Felbridge II in the Stratford Cup with Wayne Baines netting his first Hat Trick for the club and Barry Hollingsworth scoring on his 500th appearance. A third cup tie in a row followed and would provide a stern challenge away at Dormonsland Rockets II. With their first team sweeping all before them the Reserves had been strengthened significantly themselves. It was a good achievement to come away with a 6-3 win as Rockets ran us all the way. Phil Peters bagged his first of the campaign with further strikes from Lee Spears 2, Alnur Hassam, Gary Kerr and Simon Turner. It was back to league action and a terrific win at a physical Copthorne Rovers by four goals to one with the on form trio of Spears, Baines and Turner doing the damage. The second of the big league games concluded October and was perhaps the pick of the performances so far with Barry Hollingsworth inspiring The Tigers to a resounding 6-1 victory over Lindfield III with Wayne Baines continuing his fantastic form with four goals.
November
The month began with the first defeat of the season, a 4-1 home defeat, to eventual Div 5 Champions Barcombe in the Stratford Cup but the response was a swift one with a thumping 8-2 win over another Div 5 side, Ditchling II,in the Somerville Cup second round with Hat tricks from Phil Peters and Wayne Baines. The side completed a treble of cup games with a 4-0 away win at Willingdon III in the Malins cup with all the goals being truly outstanding the pick of those being Jamie Matthews first goal for the first team. It was finally back to league action to round the month off and unfortunately the game left a very sour taste and would prove to have ramifications come the end of the season. On paper a 3-3 draw at home to a poor Heath Pilgrims side looked like easy points dropped but in reality we had been denied a win via a last minute equaliser against most of the Pilgrilms front side as well as dual formed County players. Only two players names appeared on the team sheet from the last meeting of the sides and players names who did play didnt appear. Despite an appeal to the league Pilgrims escaped with a fine much to the clubs annoyance.
December
The Festive period started in spectacular style with the clubs biggest win for many years. The 12-0 away win at Fairfield featured seven goals from Phil Peters and 5 assists from the ageless Barry Hollingsworth. With two postponements in the month due to increasingly poor weather the games were already beginning to pile up and looked like the club would have a few mid week games to contend with come May. The last game before Christmas saw 2 crucial points dropped against a stubborn Buxted II who were delighted to come away with a 0-0 draw at The Rec
January
The new year started with Barry Hollingsworth becoming a dad officially and another game called off at home to Bolney and an away game at Forest Row II. Action was finally resumed at home to Wivelsfield Green II in a crunch promotion game and was perhaps the most abject display of the campaign. From two nil up and 3-2 up Handcross conspired to be crushed 7-3 with the front pairing of the visitors running riot and they would prove to be a huge thorn in the teams side all season. With the Bolney game yet again called off it was Wisdom Sports III who felt the backlash as they were torn to pieces on their own patch. The 8-1 scoreline flattered them and was a perfect repost to the previous capitulation. Some of the football was magnificent to watch with Wayne Baines and Phil Peters grabbing five between them with Mr Peters even scoring with his right Buttock!!!!
Febuary
Postponements continued into Feb with Buxted away falling foul of the weather but a week later Handcross made the short journey to Forest Row for a very tough looking fixture away in the Malins Cup Quarter Final against a side who had not lost for two years. The performance was a joy to behold with Ian Parsons capping the match with a 40 yard thunderbolt that was heaven sent. A routine 3-0 win at home to Fairfield followed in a below par performance. Heath Pilgrims II away was next up with the squad unsure of who they would be facing. The side seemed more like what was expected but on a difficult surface Pilgrims led 1-0 at Half time. Following strong words at half time the whole team responded and swiftly equalised through the ever reliable Phil Peters. With the game deep in injury time Michael Anderson appeared and headed a dramatic and crucial winner to bag 3 priceless points.
March
The league table was beginning to take shape and looked all set to go right to the wire with 5 teams still battling for the top two. March looked all set to be a titanic month but got off to the worst possible start with eventual Champions East Grinstead Wanderers snatching a 5-3 win. A second semi final place was sealed a week later with a fine 4-0 away win at Ansty in Div 5. Another battling away win at Jarvis Brook kept up the title charge with Wayne Baines scoring a stunning volley. The last game of the month was the Semi Final clash with Div 5 high flyers Copthorne. Handcross played very well in the first half and defended like trojans to protect their narrow lead with Wayne Baines scoring a late winner to book a place in the Somerville Cup final against Uckfield Town III, the clubs first final for 12 years.
April
The season was shaping up to be very tense in both league and cup as the Tigers continued their trophy hunt on 3 fronts. This was shortlived as the Malins Cup semi-final went the way of Wivelsfield green after coming back from 2-1 down to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win and break Village hearts. To cap matters Phil Peters suffered a bad knee injury that would put him at risk of missing the cup final just four days later. The much anticipated Somerville Cup Final was a superb night out for all involved and really seemed to bring the whole club together as a whole. Despite losing, the game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggested against a side boasting players from a mich higher standard with that quality showing later in the game. On the minus side it was a huge blow to lose Phil Peters for the game and perhaps a lot longer than that. No one deserved a Cup final appearance more than the long serving stalwart of the club. Their wasnt much time to sit back and take stock as two days later it was back to league action and a patched up squad came from behind to complete a league double over Lindfield III with Alex Mccreadie netting his first goal for the side. The task was now clear- five wins from the last five games would seal the title. The first part was completed with a good home win over Bolney Rovers albeit with a flattering 5-2 scoreline as the visitors created a host of chances. The same two met four days later in midweek with Alnur Hassam netting two in a more routine win. The Title chance was then blown apart by Jarvis Brook II who turned in their best performance of the season to win 5-3 much to everyones disapointment. The side had to respond and two wins from the last two games would secure second place and promotion. A tricky trip to Buxted was the first obstacle and was overcome with Jamie Matthews the hero with another late and crucial winner. This set up the final day of the season nicely. A win for either Handcross or Copthorne Rovers would see them promoted. If a draw was the outcome then Wivelsfield Green would snatch runners up with a win at relegated Fairfield. There was no late finish this time. Handcross comprehensively thumped Copthorne 5-0 in what was a sparkling performance with Simon Turner rolling back the years with brace ansd Alnur Hassam netting on his final appearance to seal an instant return back to Division Five at the first time of asking.
The season was a memorable one for many reasons. Despite missing out on the Title the pre season mission was promotion and that was achieved with the added bonus of a Cup Final after years without one. Despite the scoreline the performance was good and showed we can play at a higher level. Along the way the side showed its potential and turned in some of the best performances seen for many years with an abundance of goalscorers through out the team. There were so many players that really shone during the season with Wayne Baines bagging 29 goals making him one of the top strikers in Mid Sussex and showing everyone what he is capable and there is certainly more to come from him. Jamie Matthews came into the side after Christmas and got better and better to cement his place in the starting eleven and he also showed his ability to score from out wide. Gary Thomas was another latecomer during the season but he was outstanding right from the off and added so much to the backline and he displayed his talents going forward from full back. Barry Hollingsworth turned in his best season for many years with great consistency and even chipped in with goals. Paul Clarke was one of the unsung heros this season. He continued to hold the years back as he led by example at the heart of The Tigers defensive unit. John Gilson was as reliable as ever and still showed his unerving bravery. With a few additions to the squad next season shouldnt hold any fear as we showed against Division 5 sides in the cup that we are more than capable of promotion again.
Handcross II 2008/09 Review
There was a buzz around the team during pre season. Sure we had lost to the fronts 5-2 , to East Grinstead Mavericks 7-0 , to Rowfant 6-0 and to Lindfield 4-0 , but we had beaten Horsham trinity 2-1 and so in our heads we had a really good chance of challenging for the league. The evidence might have been against us but we had a strong squad on paper and the only real downside to pre season was the loss of Adam Law in the game against Trinity. He managed to get in the way of an 18 stone bulldozer and have his shoulder smashed to pieces, and the general consensus was that he would never play football again, let alone play that season. We didn’t know it at the time but this was the first sign that we were going to struggle with the availability of defenders all season.
The season opener was away to Plumpton and with five minutes to go before kick off , most of the team hadn’t even made it to the car park let alone the changing rooms. This lack of preparedness was further enhanced by the distinct lack of centre halves in the side which meant Graeme and Martin were the unwilling victims seconded to the back line until reinforcements arrived. It was Martin’s first competitive game for the club and he must have wondered what he had let himself in for as we got thumped 5-0. The defeat didn’t dampen our spirits and a 4-2 victory over Lindfield in the cup the following week seemed to justify our confidence. The introduction of Alan and Stu as the centre back pairing had added solidity to the team , but both players were unable to make every fixture through work commitments and a foot injury meant it was at least five games before Alan could manage a full game for the club. Alan and Stus impact was clearly displayed in the next fixture at home in the parsons cup, against a young framfield side. Jeff was standing in for Stu who was at a gay rights march in America , but even with only one half of the duo it was 2-2 at half time and we were the better side. Alan had to be substituted at half time and so we were subjected to the horror that was Jeff and Justin, centre back pairing extraordinaire. Needless to say we lost the game 4-2 . Things didn’t improve the next week in our first home league game against Wivelsfield. We started the game with a 3-5-2 formation because half the defence were missing. Three formation changes later, several injuries to what little defenders and with the dream team of Jeff and Justin again at the back, we left the field on the end of a 4-0 thumping.
Spirits remained high despite the results but the team needed a lift and Framfield at home provided the perfect tonic. The spine of the team that had beaten Lindfield was back and the formation was 4-4-2 . Jack in goal, Alan and Stu centre back, Justin and Graeme centre mid and Jeff and Matt strikers….skill , pace , strength , fitness , experience , vision and ability …if only they had retained some of those attributes as they got older. Jeff blessed us with a virtuoso performance that day scoring the goal of the season from the edge of the area and winning our first penalty. The goal was a delightful chip of a shot that saw him nodding and congratulating himself while the bay was still in mid air. The penalty was definitely a homer as Jeff rather stumbled , but you will take anything when you haven’t won a league game. Matt scored the pen and also scored our worst goal of the season, hacking the ball in from ½ a yard after a keeper fumble. The win kick started our season and was followed by a league double over a Cukfield town and a 4-0 away win at Buxted. Sure we had lost to Hassock hornets in the Div 9/10 cup but we were concentrating on the league now, we had reached the heady heights of third and won more games than we did all last season. It would never last I hear you say , and you would be right to think that. Plumpton at home and a chance to avenge the 5-0 start to the season, but no Stu, no Alan, No Jeff , meant Justin started as centre half alongside the returning Darren Dix . The 3-1 loss was an improvement on the away result but an unwelcome return to losing ways.
The side was bolstered the following week by the return of not only Stu, Alan and Jeff but also a return to the seconds for Tony Perry. Barcombe away was always going to be a difficult competitive match and so it proved to be. Handcross found themselves 2-0 down with 15 mins to play , but showed great grit and determination to come back. Matt scored the first which set up the most thrilling end to a game all season. With minutes to spare Graeme won the ball in midfield and scored a wonder goal from 35 yards out. It rivalled Jeffs effort against Framfield for goal of the season but it didn’t have the swagger that Jeff delivered. Barcombe had little time to reply but found themselves immediately in a good position when they were awarded a soft free kick on the edge of the Cross box. They scored from the kick but the ref contentiously called for it to be taken again due to Tony ‘s failure to retreat ten yards. Tony gratefully accepted the yellow card as they failed to score from the retake , and cross got a point out of a game they thought was lost. Alan was not available for the next fixture and indeed would not grace the side for another 9 games so the defence had to be changed again. Tony Perry was moved from left back to centre half and the change kind of worked as Cross won away at Lindfield and drew away to Maresfield. The next game was at home against the eventual league winners, East Grinstead. This game saw the return of the holy trinity of Graeme , Tony and Pete Geere who I can only liken to the explosives you see in tense action thrillers. You know the ones. Three harmless liquids when separated but when mixed together form a bomb capable of destroying Andorra. We started with a 4-5-1 formation that seemed to work against the young wiper snappers and for the first 20 mins we dominated the game , but slowly and with the help of the worst ref we had all season, we self destructed and lost the game 3-1. As the win over Framfield was a turning point, so was this loss. Cuckfield had to withdraw their team from the league which meant the loss of 6 points and a calamitous fall to second bottom in the league. Worse still the team was beginning to show signs of a divide and confidence was ebbing away despite some relatively good performances.
It was the home game against Cuckfield rangers, that saw the drama unfold. As with pervious defeats the signs were not good before the match. No defenders again as Stu , Pete and Alan were all missing and a 3-5-2 formation again . We actually started well but soon the team were fighting amongst themselves with the chief protagonists being Tony and Graeme. The argument had been bubbling for weeks but it culminated when Tony subbed himself after a spat with Graeme about how to play the offside trap. It was an act that saw him out of the side for several weeks and although it probably averted a fight and the sending off of two of our players , it led to the loss of the that game and the next if truth be told. With centre halves in short supply, Justin had to play that position for the rest of the game and the next two games. Although he had sured up the defence by dropping into the back line during the win over Lindfield and the draw against Maresfield , his performances at centre half were hardly awe inspiring , and his record for this three game spell was 10 goals conceded including one own goal. The only positive to come from the Cuckfield rangers game was the unexpected and welcome return to football of Adam Law , although it also shows how desperate we were for defenders when we were happy that we had a right back with a shoulder that could dislocate at any moment available to play centre half for us. After a 6-1 loss to Wivelsfield we faced Maresfield away for the comedy fixture of the year. With all the players gathered in the changing room Dave uttered the immortal words ..” we are going to try something a little different today boys”. Justin was going to play sweeper in a back four alongside bionic Adam, Jose and Paul. Carl who had never played in Midfield was going to do the holding role alongside Matt Ede . Dave and Adam Short would be on the wings with Jeff up front and Graeme having a free role. I think that is was a 1-3-4-1-1 formation but I could be wrong . The system obviously confused poor Justin who managed his only goal of the season in this game, unfortunately it was for Maresfield. In another first for the season Jeff out paced a defender and was brought down when through on goal. With the player sent off Cross managed to equalise but couldn’t beat the ten men and it was clear then that the only thing that could prevent us from being relegated was poor performances from Buxted and Cuckfield Town counting as the second relegated side following their withdrawal.
The next match was Cuckfield Rangers again and in a complete reversal from the home game it witnessed the return to midfield for Justin as Adam and Stu took picked up the defensive mantle. Dave had come to senses and decided to return to 4-4-2 and the team picked up a respectable draw, but could have really done with a win. The comedy returned in the next fixture away to Framfield who we had beaten all those months ago. Justin decided to drive half the team to the wrong pitch for this game and turned up at Danehill when he should have been the other side of Uckfield. He managed to get the players to the ground just in time for Dave to reveal a 3-2-3-2 formation with Justin and Jose as two holding midfielders. As confusing as it was for us the Framfielders were even more confused with the formation and they failed to score in the first half. By the second half they had worked it out and they eventually scored the opener. The game remained tight though until the last 4 minutes when Handcross went crazy and conceded a record three goals in three minutes. This was followed by a home defeat by Barcombe and the controversial away loss to east Grinstead where the young things complained that we had a female lineswoman and refused to restart for the second half. Well done on winning the league chaps but considering you have only two players above the age of 25 don’t you think that’s a bit of a Victorian attitude to women in football ..its not as if we are giving them the vote or anything. Everyone was looking forward to the game against Buxted, as we had whipped them 4-0 away and they had only won one game all season. Everyone was imagining how many goals they were going to get , in particular Adam short , who had 6 already , only 2 behind Matt Ede who was injured and out for the rest of the season. Adam did manage to bag one but we lost the game 6-2 and it is a measure of how bad we were that the usually unflappable Jack got his first yellow card of the season for dissent. Des was the ref but even so …dissent …Jack ………are you sure!
The last game of the season against Lindfield saw them draft in several first teamers as they were chasing promotion and we had accepted our escape from relegation by default. Graeme tried to spice up the game by telling everyone that Buxted had been awarded three points for the opposition fielding ineligible players , but that didn’t really work. 1-0 nil at half time but 1-1 early in the second half thanks to Adam Laws first goal of the season. An acrobatic semi overhead kick from a player that had to go off seconds later with an Achilles injury. By the time Adam came out of the shower 10 mins later we were 4-1 down and the game finished 5-1. It was a thoroughly bad end to a season that promised so much. With no consistent backline and a top scorer on 8 goals , a tally our scouse friend from the front team nearly achieved in one game , we were always going to struggle, but despite the arguments and some poor games , the team maintained a good sense of humour. If we could be as a good a team on the pitch as we are off it …who knows what next season will bring…here we go again…. roll on the pre season friendlies.
Handcross in Europe
Once again thanks to Malcolm Johnson for sending us this fantastic tale of the mighty Village and their European adventure.
Strange but true ...You may have heard this but just in case you have not recorded it. In April 1981 we went on tour to France. Handcross in Europe. It was a first trip and the Mid-Sussex league allowed us to rearrange fixtures to go to Paris. There were many adventures on that trip but on the football side our leader Mick Dolling had planned for us to meet teams of a similar level...well we did think highly of ourselves in those days but! When we arrived at the stadium all seemed a little unusual. People were queuing to get in, they were actually paying to see Englands fineness. The penny really dropped when we were asked for our professional licences in the changing rooms. We were clearly in some kind of mix up. After much discusion and after sobbering up some of our men, Paul Turville getting his head out of toilet (throwing up) to play. We were in the Paris cup. A competition that Eusebio made his debut back in the 60's . Our opponents a french team called Bouffemont about league one over here. We lost 7-2 (I got one of those the other scorer? I think Stuart Bailey or Mick Dolling). Not bad as we were far from full strength and not many could even remember what day it was after an all nighter in Paris. The next day we were better prepared we took on a Spanish team. With the little english they had and some dodgy spanish we worked out the previous weekend they played a little team called REAL MADRID. Who the hell were we playing REAL ZARAGOZA we proudly lost again 7-2 (once again I scored and I can proudly taunt Arsenal fans that at least I scored against RZ when they could not in the Cup winners cup some years later) I do not think Handcross have ever managed to play any other team from the top of the football tree......and the odds of this admin cock up happening again!...you tell me. I don't know if there are any photos from that event it would be great if there were in someones home. I did not have any as I was playing but I remember we took a number of supporters so maybe? Otherwise it will remain in the memory of the few but it would be good to record it in our history. After the football we had a great party and those spanish and ourselves had a really excellent time great guys. From your club founder Malcolm Johnson
