Hi
I started SDK Entertainments up, with my husband Nigel, as a karaoke
outfit just over 6 years ago progressing to disco as well about 4 years
ago and we are going from strength to strength, having recently taken
two new DJ's.
The reason for setting up in the first place was that I was a
karaoke addict and got fed up with going to my local venues and hearing
people's comments - songbooks not having been updated was the most
common.
So I decided to invest some time and money and set up on my own. I
will be totally honest you don't know how many buttons and switches you
have to use until you try it for yourself. It looked so easy! Talk
about a steep learning curve!
Our first outing was to our local Social Club and I can honestly say
it was rubbish, but if you go in there and ask them about our sound and
presentation now they will tell you that there is no comparison.
I make a promise at each venue we go to - if I haven't got a song
you want I will do everything I can to get it for the next time I'm
there. Many of my regular bookings have put that to the test and I
have had numerous hugs and kisses when someone realises I have got
'their song' for them.
The disco side of things was a natural progression from the
karaoke. It started on a quiet evening when the person booking us
wanted karaoke but didn't think about what others might want, so
instead of singing I got them dancing! We now spend most Saturdays
through the summer doing discos for weddings. We normally go to about
4 Wedding Fayres a season and have found this works very well.
As far as advertising goes, we have this year put an entry into
Yellow Pages, we go to the Wedding Fayres (as mentioned above),
occasionally advertise in the Friday-Ad but the rest of it comes from
word of mouth. We think that's the best way - if people aren't happy
with what they see and hear they won't recommend you. The number of
bookings per year is steadily increasing at 50% per year minimum.
On a technical note, well, that's Nigel's department. He's the
lifter, shifter and Mr Fix-it. Our system would not be what it is
without him. He's my ears out front for checking sound levels for
singers and disco. The lights are his baby completely and as we grow
and the light show gets bigger he gets his own controls. Also if you
want a chat about technical matters he is always happy to oblige.
We have a good system going - we load the van together, he drives to
the venue, we unload and set up together, I run the show and he can
relax and have a couple of beers, we shut down together and I drive
home. Everyone's happy!
Thanks and happy surfing.
